Whatever one can say, whatever criticism you will eventually want to bring up, whatever jealousies you have have of the man, or whatever he really was, he was undoubtedly the greatest superstar icon of our day.

More than an entertainer, he filled the stage with entertainment like no other. More than a cultural figure, he challenged how we viewed ourselves as members and citizens of Planet Earth, not just these artificial borders we call states. More than a celebrity, he made life difficult for the papparazzi and others who would try to define him in their own image. He left us some of those images, from seedy child molester to strangly quirky person, to not a person at all with that unusual skin and looks (has anyone ever considered he may be from another planet, and came here to add value to our lives?), but he never let others define him, o how they would try.

Simply put, he was and is an icon of late-20th century decadence, what we valued in our time. The last quarter of the 20th century produced some of the greatest and culturally defining personalities in a way the 1930s and 60s did before it (indeed, that quarter is really the final leg n tail of the 1960s way of thought). He was a generational production, stemming from a time when black people felt free to be black, and define themselves. The 1970s produced the belief that African-Americans finally realized, or refused not to realize or be defined by others, that being black is beautiful and what we produce is beautiful and we need and oughta act that way - RIGHT ON!!

That he and the people and world from whence he came evolved into his mega-stardon is a testament to those times. That they now leave us, in the trusting hands of those who follow in their footsteps, is a seed of their everlasting greatness, planted in our future and wonderful destiny for Planet Earth, whatever some may say.

the rich textures of New York City are unparelled anywhere in the world, those of us who live here, while with many valid complaints, still cannot get over the enjoyment of such a beautiful city. if you can build and survive and build a decent network of friends and stay with them and they with you, that would be a triumph. but alas, that is not the new york most new yorkers know. people come and go, suceed and fail, live and die. all the while you're going about your business trying to survive. even if you are rich. the city consumes you easily, you have to take a chunk outta it back.

so with such a reality, it is comforting to know another part of its reality makes it more or less worth it...

What so many today sometimes forget (or never knew because you didn't live here) is how bad New York was 20 years ago, and even then for so long - at least since the 1950s and in some areas forever - before then. A truly gritty city. But no fear - here's a recap of an article, courtesy the NY Times, of what we miss:

My tired 1981 Datsun had paid its dues.

It had logged 73,000-odd miles, mostly on the Baltimore-Washington interstate. On the outside, it had suffered numerous bumps and bruises and scrapes. Inside, it was coated with spilled baby formula and Donald Duck apple juice. It deserved a decent dotage. Instead, it was sentenced to Manhattan.

I had heard all the horror stories about auto ownership in New York City, what with its sadistic parking regulations, lunar roadways. But when my brother offered to give me the car, I figured it was worth the price. I thought a battle-scarred, pockmarked jalopy with a busted radio made a far less tempting target than all the shiny Volvos, Saabs and BMW's parked nearby.

''No self-respecting burglar would even think of breaking into it,'' my brother said. Joey, things aren't that simple. I've had your car only a few weeks now, but already, you wouldn't recognize it.

The body count began almost immediately, as the car sat on West 88th Street, when the back lock was drilled out. A few nights later and a few blocks to the south, the lock on the passenger side disappeared. Not long ago, the rear window was kicked in on West 85th Street.

After that, some spray cleaner and a roll of Bounty paper towels, bought to remove the apple juice but foolishly left in the back seat, vanished. Sorry, Rosie, but on New York's streets Bounty is not the quickest picker-upper: The thieves are quicker. Then, a speaker went. And most recently, the radio. The steering wheel remains - at least when I last looked.

I'm hardly the only victim of predators. Walk along Riverside Drive any morning and look down on the ground. Every few feet, you'll see fresh nests of pellet-sized, Coke-bottle-colored glass, all of which were car windows only a few hours before.

The city is powerless and seems utterly incapable of stopping the problem, if not altogether indifferent to it. Of course, where there are dollars to be made - from parking violations -New York is uncharacteristically, uncannily Johnny-on-the-spot. Oversleep by five minutes or double park for 10, and invariably you'll find a ticket tucked under your windshield wiper.

But there's no profit in crime prevention, so the cars are sitting ducks.

The situation leads to strange consequences. Some New Yorkers take a Zen-like attitude and leave their car doors unlocked. Others adopt a more pragmatic approach. They carry on a bizarre one-way conversation with the pillagers through signs posted on car windows. Some are crude homemade jobs, some are printed stickers; some resemble ''Baby on Board'' notices. The tone varies, as drivers strive to sound firm without prompting gratuitous vandalism.

Most signs are straightforward. Some more comprehensive: Not only is there no radio; there's nothing in the trunk or glove compartment either. Some are defiant: ''No anything.'' Some are sardonic pleas for sympathy: ''No radio - already taken.'' Some are more informative: ''Nothing in the car - just maps.''

And some are abuser-friendly, if not downright degrading: ''No valuables. No radio. Thanks.'' Imagine someone thanking a thief for sparing him and victimizing someone else. I was half tempted to scrawl my own addition to that one: ''No dignity.''

Maybe the most articulate messages aren't signs but wounds: paper bags, cardboard or plastic where windows once were. These drivers are apparently wrestling with the problem I face: whether it's better to fix things or leave them as they are.

The first is expensive and, quite possibly, futile. But the second may be worse. As the hulks along New York's highways attest, vultures can find something of value in even the most picked-over carcasses.

Perhaps my experiences are atypical, like the car itself. My Datsun has an Achilles ''wheel'': an out-of-state license plate. To local brigands, this is a sure sign of a hopeless rube - the type who couldn't possibly imagine how barbaric life in New York City has become. They're right.

One of the great underreported fashion magazines of the modern era is showing it's still quite relevant today: Ebony Magazine. Years ago, when black Americans had no representation of their likenesses on the screen or in "mainstream media" (I love that term - what do, or did, mean by mainstream?) they had the fashion section of Ebony to see themselves as beautiful as they really are. That fashion section eventually evolved (with the help of the Johnson Products Company, the creator of that now-infamous hair care product Afro Sheen, and exclusive sponsor of Soul Train) into the now famous and influential Ebony Fashion Fair, a now-fashion runway icon production which had produced a bevy of famous models (including several that were not African-American).

That said, you ask, why are you showing this image of a white, blond-haired, blue-eyed Barbie on a dollar bill? Because I found it in Ebony Magazine in a funny blog about the future of money and how we can make the otherwise dull dead presidents currency a bit more exciting. Just goes to show you there is room for Ivory in Ebony too :)

well you know we live in troubled money times now.

i'm in the library this afternoon, had to print out a form for work (benefits related) and don't have a working printer (i.e. the one i have is broken and i don't - and haven't for 2 years - had the extra money to buy a new one), so i went to the library so your tax dollars could pay for my prints.

this included my comp passes to the reopening of Scores, NYC's premier gentlemen's club. hey, these were important.

the last time i was at Scores i had just met some ladies from a bachelorette party, we had martinis, i went to Scores and danced with these honeys, and woke up the next morn in one of the chicks i met's bed in her apt in Stuy Town. she was very happy & pleasant, though, obviously a job well done last night! yes, it was a fun night alright, that of it which i can remember, which ain't any more than what i've said. what i do remember is it reminded me for a long time to not have martinis for happy hour, they can be strong. but hey, another nite like that night on the town would make a few gray goose martinis the right price to pay to get back to a flow like that again. just this time, more memory in the hard drive, please.

well, now that i've digressed, back to who's sitting next to me. it's um, ahhh, er, well, YES! - mr. chester the molester - live in new york. this (at minimum) 80-or-older-something old guy. dressed in a military flight shirt, with dog tags around his neck, a flight crew cap, and military boots, viewing page after page of gay stud porn, checking his MySpace page for studs who wrote him, and otherwise surfing and cruising as much young gay ass (or dick) as he could on his limited 45-minute library computer stay time.

and yes - he printed, too.

The recent movie 'Run Fatboy Run' may be remarkable for the issue it doesn't focus on. Thandie Newton plays a pregnant bride who's jilted at the altar by Simon Pegg and later falls for Hank Azaria. While she's black and her two suitors are white, the story hardly mentions race and focuses on Pegg's need to run a marathon and prove that he can finish something, thereby winning back Newton's heart.

Is it possible that attitudes about interracial relationships have changed so much since the 2006 movie 'Something New,' and certainly 1967's 'Guess Who's Coming To Dinner' -- which were all about familial pressure to not date outside of your race -- that the subject doesn't warrant mention?

When we broached the topic around the AOL offices, we started discussing how tough it can still be to date interracially and focus on attitudes that can doom an interracial relationship.

TOP 13 WAYS TO DOOM AN INTERRACIAL RELATIONSHIP

Being unprepared for how the families will react
Alexis: When I was in the fourth grade, one of my older relatives said to me, 'I hear you have a white boyfriend.' This wasn't a boyfriend, it was just a guy I sat near in class, but my cousin couldn't see that. She asked, 'Are you losing your identity?' And when that kind of thing happens, any kind of joy of bringing someone home to be with your family is somehow tainted.
Ken: Funny thing is that I think white families are more accepting because they view it as a "phase."

Not understanding of the physical and cultural differences of people of different races
Jennifer: If I have to explain over and over why I'm not getting into the ocean to swim because of my hair, over and over, it's like "Enough already, don't you get it?"
Ken: This might seem odd, but here's something that has stuck out to me when I've been dating interracially. With one out of every 10 black men being in jail, or damn close, it's impossible not to be familiar with the prison system and criminal culture, as a black man from a predominantly black working class neighborhood, it's strange to watch "The Wire" and have feelings of nostalgia while your significant other is watching with shock and awe.

Race is just a fetish
Jennifer: It's always a tip-off if he only dates black women.

Alexis: White guys who only date black women usually have a reason. Like they were raised by black servants and feel more comfortable with black people.
Ken: Anyone who dates any race exclusively needs a shrink. America isn't a melting pot, it's a store with every flavor its shelves. So it's understandable to not step outside of your race because we're still a very segregated society. But only dating black chicks because you like big butts is the definition of a fetish. On the other hand, I've met Latin women who only date black men because they want to be with someone who can share their experiences as a minority in this country. They say Latin guys want them barefoot in the kitchen and aren't as accepting or appreciative of an upwardly mobile, professional woman.

Stress from Parents
Alexis: People often expect that the white family won't be receptive to bringing home a partner who's black. But my stepfather had big problems with me bringing home a white man. And the weird thing is, I had been dating a black man before that and he'd treated me really badly, but even though my relationship with the white guy was much better, my stepfather started asking "What happened to that black guy you were dating?" I had to move out the house because my stepfather was harassing me about my white boyfriend.
Ken: At the end of the day, it's personal and has a lot to do with gender. My pops wouldn't care what color she was, as long as I was getting some. But my mother saw it as abandoning the black woman.

Insecurity
Jennifer: There can be this concern that you're disappointing your family even if you don't hear anything.
Alexis: Sometimes you wonder: "Does he value me as much as he would as if I were the same race as he is?" And I wonder if I'm overvaluing a white person because of internalized racism.

Societal Pressures
Jennifer: And you sometimes wonder if he's going to get tired of the putting up with the societal pressures.

Verbal attacks
Alexis: "When I'm walking down the street with a white guy, black men have gotten in my face and yelled things like 'You are against the black man!' and 'White man is the devil!' It would be nice if the white guy protected me, but I'm not sure if I'd want to see him get into a fight. When that happens, you're just left in this raw space where you feel like no one understands and you don't want to be in.
Ken: I don't notice, but I've been in a relationship where my girlfriend did. It's all about confidence. If you're walking with someone of the other race and someone says something negative it's because they could sense how nervous your partner is. Regardless of color, they saw that you could be disrespected with zero retaliation and did so.

Not understanding the little inequalities
Alexis: Sometimes I have to go to several drugstores to find hair care products. And that's just part of being minority in the culture. But to have to tell my white boyfriend say 'Get a grip. Who cares?' makes things even worse.
Ken: Racism is not an American invention. I was in St. Maarten on the beach and everyone approached my [white] girl for everything -- drinks, food, chairs. It became pretty obvious that they assumed I was an island native she was having a tryst with. I guess it's assumed black men don't travel unless is for sex tourism in Brazil.

Too much fascination with the other culture
Ken: When I was an undergrad in college, I often met women who had never been so close to a black person, and I mean like within five feet. Relationships like those are basically walks on the wild side that end abruptly after everyone's got what they came for.

Feeling like a fish out of water
Jennifer: Any time you're out with friends and they're all white, and you're always in the minority, that tends to get awkward over time.
Ken: If you work in corporate America you're used to being the only black person in the room. Why would you want that to carry over to your personal life?

Making fun of the other person's culture
Alexis: I had a boyfriend who thought it was alright to make fun of hip-hop all the time. In this culture, if white people don't understand something about another person's culture, they think it's alight to make fun it.
Ken: That's just a no-no. But making fun of hip-hop isn't making fun of me. Not all of us are rappers.

Reacting badly to racial tension
Alexis: Whenever I walk down the street with a white guy I get stares, and when a guy gets angry about the tension and is always being defensive, it's annoying.
Ken: It's never a problem until you make it one. But reacting badly is just making everyone aware of your insecurities.

Getting Over the Problems
Alexis: The answer is to stay focused on all of the things you have in common.
Jennifer: You're not always going to do the right thing. If you're committed to the relationship, and can laugh some of it off, then you can talk through those times when a person doesn't do the thing you hoped he or she would.

Yes, the ho was an 18-year-old runaway living in one of her multiple states. While partying in Miami, Florida, she did a sexploitave for Girls Gone Wild, the video company's founder says.

Ashley Alexandra Dupre stars in seven "Girls Gone Wild" videos made when she was 18. Joe Francis reached out to Ashley Alexandra Dupre, now 22, with an offer of $1 million to appear in "Girls Gone Wild", his company announced Tuesday. But Francis said someone had a revelation at the Tuesday morning staff meeting: Did anyone think to check the archives? They did -- and there she was.

"It'll save me a million bucks," Francis said Tuesday. "It's kind of like finding a winning lottery ticket in the cushions of your couch. We actually had been dealing with her rep. Our [offer] was the real deal. We just never made the connection."

He said his employees are pulling the footage and planned to offer it on the Web site by Tuesday evening, with a free sampling on the front page and the rest available with a $29.95 monthly subscription. Dupre signed legal papers and spent a full week on the bus, filming seven full-length tapes that included nudity and same-sex encounters, according to the company. Her attorney, Don D. Buchwald, declined comment.

According to a "Girls Gone Wild" press release, Dupre visited Miami in 2003 to celebrate her 18th birthday. After fighting with a friend and getting thrown out of her hotel, Dupre found a nearby "Girls Gone Wild" bus, and started on her nude sexcapade, flashing her body and enjoying sexual interludes with boys and girls all week on the bus. "I personally ended up buying her a Greyhound bus ticket back home to North Carolina," said Francis, who returned to California last week after being sentenced to time served and fines in Florida in a case involving filming underage girls. He still faces trial on federal tax evasion charges that carry a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

Dupre's public profile has skyrocketed since Spitzer announced his resignation last week, after being accused of spending tens of thousands of dollars on prostitutes, including a February Valentine's Day tryst with Dupre, aka "Kristen,". Her MySpace page was hit more than 5 million times, her songs on music-download site Aime Street sold 2 million downloads for $0.98, making her an instant millionaire.

Hustler publisher Larry Flynt e-mailed Dupre an offer for $1 million to appear nude in his magazine, but didn't sound optimistic that she would settle for that amount. "She is no doubt going to do a book. There will probably be a movie," he said. "I think she is going to have so many offers coming in that it will probably be wishful thinking just to get in the door."
